Has anyone got a Vax v-020 or similar cylindrical vax and could share hints with me?

Hi all, I bought myself a shiny new vax v-020 a couple of months ago to replace my old orange vax that I've had ever since they were first invented and that has seen me through years of kids pets husbands etc. Even better thing than sliced bread. I don't need a vacuum just a shampooer so thought this new one would be great. I freecycled my old one and wish I hadn't!
The brush that came with this new one was obviously never going to work, bits missing, so I rang vax who eventually sent me a new one though I don't think they believed me about the original one. The new one is great, all shiny and all the bits seem to be there. However I can't make it clean the carpet. Soapy water comes down the tube into the brush head, it swirls around and then gets sucked back into the dirty water cylinder. Fine, just what you want it to do, only problem is it doesn't touch the carpet on the way!! So I end up with a dirty water cylinder full of clean soapy water!!! I've tried testing by putting my hand under it but my hand comes away as dry as the carpet. Today for the second time since I've used it I've had to use the 2 inch wide upholstery head to clean the whole living room carpet - backbreaking and exhausting. At least it works though! Only consolation is that I must've used mega-calories!

Has anyone got one of these and tell me what I'm doing wrong? the manual is useless and much of it doesn't refer to my vax anyway.

Yours in hair tearing desperation - Liz
