Thanks to Rosieben for the warm welcome, much appreciated. Particularly as I was feeling a bit (well a lot) ashamed.:o While I was typing my post, Icecubequeen had posted and the situations are similar but I'm worrying about managing on 4 times their budget:eek: how excessive are we? You are all inspirational though, 'cause reducing your spend and living better obviously can be done!Proud to have dealt with our debt. DFW Nerd 1474

Hi, I've been reading the shopping challange and would like to join you all for June(paid on 15th). I will have £250 to spend for the month for 2 adults, 2 children aged 7 & 3, also 2 cats. This amount is for everything. I have tried in the past to cut back but spend a huge amount every month, BUT we now have serious money trouble so I need to keep to my budget. Please can you advise me on whats the best places to shop and some cheap meal ideas. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I thought you all were the best people to ask. Any advise would be apriciated.
Thanks.
First off suggestion is to browse the Old Style threads for all kinds of money saving tips, including cutting laundry costs and of course home cooking which is cheaper and healthier. You'll find loads of recipes and ideas - take a look in the OS index.
For more generally financial help, you may find it useful to post in the Debt-Free-Wannabe threads for help if you havent already - if you post a listing of your incomings and outgoings you will get loads of good advice.
I'm sure more experience OS'ers will offer more advice shortly. Good luck with the challenge!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Is there anyone else on here who lives alone? I started this week really well, cooked up a storm to fill the freezer over the weekend but am now bored of the food I have to eat all week How does anyone else overcome this?
I live alone and I tend to only use meals in my freezer for about half the week, the other half I cook fresh stuff instead or use part of the frozen food.
For example the other day I thawed some spag bol and used it to fill some giant mushrooms. I then topped with cheese and cooked in the oven and they were gorgeous. I also make ratatouille and it goes well with fresh fish, chicken, jacket potatoes and mixed in with pasta. Making more versatile dishes could be the answer and they you might not get so bored.0 -
I,m a singleton too, and I get bored with whats in the freezer. I think it,s the spoiled brat side of me showing, because it,s there I dont want it. Just have a word with myself, and I,m usually fine after that. I wouldnt have let my kids away with it:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o

Well my first week in June, wasn't good, spent £82.92, but OH wanted to go to the Cash and Carry to get a big bottle of Wrocestershire Sauce, as he loves it, but objects to paying £1.50odd a bottle, so we got a 2litre bottle for £5.30 odd, which is the equivalent of nearly 6 ordinary bottles, but thta'll last him the rest of the year! We also got some chicken breasts, over 11lb for £12 as they were almost up to their sell by date. They are a lovely size, and we love chicken, So I've frozen them in 2's or 3's, and we have more than enough for 11 meals. Also bought 2 gallon bottles of white and cheap malt vinegar, so they'll last for ages too.
I've now got main meals in the freezer for 28 days, so that takes care of June! Got a bit of a headache at the moment, I think its a bit stormy today, so after lunch I'm going to do a bit of baking and freezing to use up some eggs!
We rescue ex battery chooks and I sell the excess eggs from my front garden, but sales are down a bit at the moment, and we have a glut of eggs.
Good luck for the rest of the month peeps!!!!0 -
Well...what a disastrous week for me!! I'd got all organsied by booking a delivery slot, using coupons/codes etc with Mr T. I bulk ordered loads to get the cost upto £100 (required for voucher discount!) Had all good intentions of then amending my order with fresh stuff closer to the time. Needless to say...I got the delivery day wrong - thought it was Friday, so sat down at my PC on Thursday night to amend the order...and Mr T delivery van pulled up outside...I'd booked it for Thursday instead!!!!!
Although what I've ordered will last us all month (eg 4 tins of baby formula, massive box of washing powder, 3 x 4 tins beans etc...) it meant I've had to go shopping again today for stuff for meals!!! All in all this week (with topping up on bread/milk etc) I've spent £141.24!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did however, get £105.52 (with delivery charge) worth of shopping from Tesco for £71.85. Also had a £5 off voucher for Sainsburys - so went there today - ended up spending £65.60.
I do have all my toiletries, nappies, baby milk, household cleaners, loo rolls, kitchen rolls etc etc, but now only have £68.92 to last us until 27th June!!!!!! May have to admit defeat.....will see how next week goes!!!!!!:rolleyes:20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

Blown it for this week, spent £10.05 in Tesco. most of this went on compost and bug spray for roses, the rest on toiletries. I now have enought to last a month, the month being april 2010. I have quite a lot at the moment. But i should level out for a 4 week month:T:jDabbler in all things moneysaving.Master of none:o
