Best windscreen chip repair

Sorry if this has been covered many times before.

While driving today, a car going the other way kicked up a stone and chipped the windscreen :( We're not covered under our insurance for it.

Are the big national repair companies as good as they make out?

And just out of curiosity, had I got the car's registration number (which I didn't) would I have had any claim?

Autoglass are pretty good, I've used them in the past to replace a windscreen.

As far as claiming from the car that caused the chip, I doubt you would have any chance to claim, it also wasn't intentional.

I have worked for Glass-weld and had repairs done by National Windscreens, Autoglass and Kwik-fit and to be honest the repairs are pretty much all the same with the real difference being in the actual chip and the person that does the repair and how much time they spend doing it.

Thanks both. I've booked with National Windscreens for tomorrow. I'll post again once we've had it done to let people know what they're like.

It was supposed to be a cheap day out! I'm hoping it can be repaired, as it seems to be just on the limit of the repairable area on the driver's side.

I didn't think there would be a claim, but I was just curious.

    All done.

Friendly chap, quick repair and a fair warning about potential problems, eg the cracks might still be visible, and the repair might cause the windscreen to crack further (it didn't). The only downside was the 4 hour window I was given. Otherwise all good and I'll probably use them again. Hopefully I won't have to though.

Had mine done this time last year by Autoglass and I only got to notice some weeks after that the quickclear windscreen no longer worked on one side of the repaired crack.

If it is a small chip you can DIY with this kit

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIY-Windscreen-Windshield-Repair-Kit-Glass-Chip-Crack-Repair-System-/170810090618?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27c513247a

I have used it on 2 cars with small chips and both passed MOT afterwards.

Mrs Imp, can I ask you if you paid to have this done or did you do get it done on your insurance ? I need to get mine done but I have a high glass excess on my insurance. I would like to get an idea of what it costs.

I'd find a local windscreen glass firm, if their chip repair prices are anything like their glass replacement prices you can bet they are over-inflated.

I had a quote for a windscreen from the big boys and ranged from £220-£260, find a local firm who did the same for £140.

Autoglass mention that they charge £62.50 for a repair if you have no insurance: http://www.autoglass.co.uk/Windscreen-Repair-Cost.192.0.html

    .

Have you bothered to read #1 ? :wall:

Personally I have had Autoglass twice to repair chips and twice the have fallen out after a week or two.
Last one was a company called glassweld - excellent job would highly recommend them.
