Storage Costs- going back some years

I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help- looking for a place to start understanding what my liability is here. Given that this situation may come up when moving house, it seems like a reasonable place to start. I'll try to keep it brief...
Many years ago, I put some items into storage with a local man-with-a-warehouse. My recollection is that we had a verbal contract for a monthly storage charge. I paid for the first 6 months up-front, but never received an invoice for either this payment, or any future months.
Some time later, I tried contacting the company in two letters to again get invoices for money that I owed but didn't hear anything back. I concluded (erroneously!) that the man had either destroyed or sold the items I'd left with him in storage. When I returned to the town, some years later his warehouse had been demolished and replaced with a new building.
I have recently been contacted by this man, who tells me that he still has everything and wants rid of it. Although he hasn't said how much I will owe him, I would expect him to want payment for the services he has given.
Clearly it's a tricky situation. The main problem lies with my assumption that things would have been disposed of years ago; I would not have left the items in storage this long had I known that he still had them. However, I do have a moral liability to this man- I'd like to find if I also have a legal liability.
Thanks for your help,
EDIT:
One question might be- "why didn't the company contact me?". Since the items were put in storage, I have moved a number of times mostly through rented accomodation, and it would have been difficult for the company to locate me.

I've no idea, I don't have a copy of the contract (and not sure if there even was one). If I'm liable for the full amount, £2-£4k?Why didn't you ring him?
It's a good question. By the time I realised there was a problem, all I had was a receipt for the first payment, with his address on it (no company name). I've no idea why I didn't go to directory enquiries (as it was at the time) from that information.0
