So tell me, if you have a DSLR camera, lenses, laptop, camcorder, binoculars, jewellery, expensive perfume, etc, etc, how are you supposed to put all that in hand luggage as well as stuff you might need for the flight?
Granted that the most expensive should stay with you but this line of patronising statement gets spouted all the time, sometimes it is just unavoidable that some expensive items have to get put in checked luggage.
I would say that the golden rule is if you have to put expensive items in checked luggage make sure you are well insured.

It's quite simple, I plan my holidays.
Compact Camera + Camcorder, Tablet or Smartphone go into carry on. Cheap binoculars (if required) go into hold luggage. My wife only takes cheapish jewellery and perfume on holiday.

Even the best insurance cannot recover holiday snaps/films when you are on your return journey. (Granted, these days you can just pop your SD cards into your carry on). What about any sensitive data on your laptop? Most things can be cracked given enough time, assuming you have actually encrypted your data in the first place.

If you 'have to' take DSLR + Lenses + Tripod + Light Meter etc etc, then fine, take out the best insurance that you can afford.

Sorry, but no way, no how would any of those things go into hold luggage, if I couldn't manage to take them in my hand luggage they'd stay at home. Those things don't even take up that much room anyway, and how much more 'stuff' would you need for a flight? A book, a pen, a drink.

In reality sometimes one doesn't have an option to take stuff into the cabin in carry on luggage, if it is bulky or heavy, say.

Quite easily. I don't understand why you think it would be a problem.

You call it patronising, others say common sense.

It's perfectly avoidable with a modicum of planning

    Each to their own.
I would say that the golden rule is if you can't fit an expensive item in your hand luggage, don't take it :)

    I agree.
I pack with the assumption that my case could be delayed/lost so my hand luggage usually contains DSLR camera, lenses, compact camera, camcorder, Sat Nav, mobile phone and the chargers for all these, as well as a change of clothes, book, maps and whatever else I'm not prepared to risk not having with me if my case does go astray. Laptop in laptop bag.
    Simple:)

I didn't mean that earrings couldn't be taken on board, more that there were items that realistically wouldn't be practical to carry on board and therefore would have to go in the hold.

In this example, as the earrings were a gift my wife had no idea that they were as valuable as they were. She only found out when she contacted the friend who gave them to her to check how much she should be claiming for.

We'll be checking the wording of the policy as soon as we get a copy from the Human Resources team. Re being locked, I guess that wouldn't make much difference in this case as the customs team would have had to open it anyway.

Did your wife's employer's policy cover the loss of these earrings?

The only difficulty here is we are unsure whether the theft occured in the UK or Russia (I would assume that makes a difference as to which police force would need to take this up?).

Did you report the theft to either Russian or UK police?

I agree with most of the other posters about never putting valuables in hold luggage, and especially with jackieblack that if it won't fit in my hand luggage, it stays at home..

I'm still not getting why it realistically wouldn't be practical to carry earrings on board. On board in a handbag has to be the most realistically practical place to carry small objects such as earrings.

It would be practical to carry them on I think. You'd have to ask my wife that one! I guess she just grouped all items like make-up, jewellery, toiletries together. In my experience, once something goes in her handbag it's just as likely to get lost in there amongst all the myriad bits and pieces she seems to carry!

And having travelled a lot and never having an issue before she probably thought something like this wouldn't happen. She had other jewellery in there which wasn't taken.
