Over payment

Hi

Not sure if any body can help?

If you've been made an over payment by a bank how long do they have to claim it back?

Many thanks

6 years, but they'll most likely find out within 6 months and debit your account automatically, so I wouldn't advise you to spend it.

You could, of course, do the right thing.

If the payment is from a known or suspected money launderer, you will with certainty be implicated if you touch the money. This could mean years of misery since you will have a CIFAS marker that will make opening new bank accounts, or applying for any sort of loan/mortgage, difficult/impossible.

Best ask your bank, in writing, to remove the money from your account
