Help on Dual Band Routers

Morning all,

Think our netgear router might be on its way out and wondering about replacing it with a dual band one, got a budget of around £100, (maybe a TP link TL WDR4300 N750) just had a few questions and wanted a bit of advice

As we're on Virgin would I still need to keep the original modem?
How would I check if the laptops we have are compatible (vista & w7) with 5 GHz?
Guessing there won't be any problems with ps3 & xbox360?

Thanks

ps3 and 360 are on 2.4GHz, so you'll have to leave the router operating on dual bands anyway....I suspect you will only need a 2.4GHz router for your needs & devices.

You need to check your network card is capable of receiving 802.11a which is 5Ghz frequency.
In Wi-Fi wireless networking, dual band is the capability to transmit on the 5 GHz band of 802.11a and also the 2.4 GHz band used by 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n

    Cheers all,

banger9365 its cable did try and get a superhub out of VM a while ago but they wanted to charge me, I've also red a few reviews and they weren't very favourable (may have been the old one)

Cheers GunJack, something to think about, although we do also have Nexus10 and Samsung S4 at home which guessing should both handle 5Ghz.

Wasn't sure how to do this but have now found out Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN on the older laptop so should be ok, However WiFi Link 1000 on the other one looks like it may not be compatible

Seems to keep losing signal just lately and keep having one turn it off and back on, doesn't appear to be a problem with the connection as when iI'm plugged directly into the modem the connections fine. Tried to move it round the room but stil no luck. Think it was second hand when we bought it a few years ago though

if it's wifi you're talking about, run inssider on one of the laptops, especially when you're having the problems, to check for overlapping channels and change yours accordingly. Probably wifi interference from a new router in your vicinity (neighbours).
