I'm sorry if everyone already knows about this one, and if it's repeating an earlier thread then ignore me!
The reason I wanted to post is that I've noticed that when new people post their SOA, usually if Sky appears on there they are either advised to change the package or switch to Freeview to get rid of their bills.
I just wanted to make sure that everyone's aware of Freesat from Sky- it's the one they tout as £150 all in. What they tend not to advertise is that existing customers (who've been with them for a year or more) can call up and purchase the free to air card from Sky for £20. This ends your monthly bills and lasts for three years. You'll get all of the free to air channels, and also loads of digital radio stations and all the regional variations on the BBC. Another great thing about this is that as Freeview gets more and more popular, and as the Beeb and ITV get closer to launching their own free satellite, Sky will have to add more and more free channels to keep up with the competition.
Technically, this is a better option that switching to Freeview as it's a £20 spend that'll last you three years. The sky equipment in your home is legally yours after a year, and so you don't need to go out and choose new equipment or install it. Another thing that many people may not realise is that to receive Freeview you do need an aerial capable of receiving a digital signal. If your aerial is too old (or if Sky 'kindly' removed it for you when you subscribed) then the cost of a new one can be anything up to £70- without installation.
Like I said, if you're a Sky customer they tend not to shout about this... so I thought I'd post it for everyone to see
For a list of the channels that you'll receive on Freesat, see

You can call them on 0870 606 1111 (sorry I don't know the free number) to ask for a Free to Air card.
Hope this helps some of you... and hope my employers don't read this website...

funny you should mention that. do sky do this on purpose? when they came to mine they said "oh we'll just use your freeview arial to set it up" even when I protested I wanted my arial for freeview upstairs they said it didn't matter?!

From what I can see removing aerials does seem to be a bit of a policy! A friend of mine had sky installed a couple of years ago... and the guy 'reassured' her that he'd get rid of that 'messy aerial' up there!
The thinking behind it I suppose is that removing the old aerial is removing the temptation to go back to analogue or get Freeview. Most sky customers probably think that once the dish is up and their old aerial is gone it's too much hassle to cancel sky and either lose all TV or arrange a new aerial and installation, so they end up reducing it down to a £15 package- which imho is still £15 too much.
I trawled the sky website and found only ONE reference to the free to air card- and even that was worded very carefully! It's under the FAQ's section- the Q being "I already have satellite equipment- do I need to subscribe to recieve a signal?" Personally, I think it should read "I'm a sky customer and I'm fed up with paying over the odds for my TV and my aerial's been dismantled... do I have to keep forking out just for a basic package?" The answer of course is the same... the free to air card.Don't suffer alone - if you are experiencing Domestic Abuse contact the National Domestic Abuse Helplines

Thanks Shell-Girl
Just wondered, how much difference is there between the channels on Freesat and the channels you are left with if you end the subscription and just keep the box? We cannot get freeview here.
Thanks0 -

I guess that SKY+ goes out of the window if you just ask for a 'free to air' card.
Does anyone know if you can pay the £10 a month for that facility?

Thanks Gemmzie,
One more thing - Sky are not charging for SKY+ from 1st July.
Will this apply to an 'FTA' card?
