I have booked both of these as was advised the queues can be very long, the Colosseum ones were esp helpful as I stupidly booked the wrong date and emailed them and they changed it!

What else would people recommend squeezing into a short break (2.5 days?) I was thinking the Apian Way but its so far out...

oh dear... I completely missed that one Bob!!:wall:

pickle - the Villa Borghese was lovely if you're into art. You only get a 2 hour slot, so doesn't take up too much of your day. I think we went for the last slot of the day 5-7pm, just pre dinner. definitly needs to be pre booked a few weeks in advance (think it was fully booked around 4/6 weeks when we were there in april). The park itself is lovely for a picnic, or bike ride (you can hire them there).

Definitely go to the piazza navona for a drink/ice cream and watch the world go by.

If you're short of time then prebooking is the answer but a word to the wise: the Colosseum is very close to the Forum Romani and it would be such a shame to miss that, especially the heartbreaking site of the altar to Julius Caesar where flowers are still left every day. Also, if you're doing the Vatican be sure the Grotto is included in your tour. Breathtaking.

As far as I can tell, the Colosseum ticket also includes the Forum, and includes a downloadable audio tour. I think the Vatican ticket includes all the main sections as well.

My intention is to get all the excursions set up this weekend so that it's all paid for in advance. On the cruise we're also stopping off at Corsica, Florence/Pisa, St Raphael and Barcelona. Can't wait :T

If you've anytime left over try to see the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon too. They're within short walking distance of each other.

The problem with Rome is there's so much to see. I've always described the city like seeing an old lady with her knickers down. The faded beauty of the place and the great range of architectural styles from the classical to the modern. It's the only holiday destination I've ever returned to.
