Returning item to USA.

I bought a piece of jewellery, (its not heavy), from a New York jeweller via their Ebay store. When it arrived I found the clasp to be faulty and immediately contacted the store via ebay site. The jeweller replied "it was their fault, they should have checked it before despatch. If I return it I will get a refund of the amount I paid them".

1.Why do I have to cover the cost of returning the faulty Item?

2.What is the best way of sending it back so I know it has been delivered?

The item cost $200 so I will have to pay insurance I suppose.

Any advise will be appreciated.

You should sent it airsure so it is signed for on receipt. You may need to pay extra for insurance.

I'd contact the seller and explain how much it costs to send (get a figure from the Royal Mail website) and ask for them to send you a payment to cover the cost as they have admitted fault.

What happens with customs fees in situations like this? Assuming it is declared at its correct value, the seller is likely to have to pay US charges and the buyer will pay for a second time when the replacement arrives here.

The seller is having an item returned. no duty due
The buyer may get hit again and would have to appeal on the basis it was a new for new replacement.
I say new because sending a used item back for repair and it being replaced with new,leaves it liable for duty!
