What is a good price for conveyancing?

I am selling an ordinary 3 bed house in the South West of England. Just an average street, no problems with flooding, no nasties for the area in the pipeline etc. I have a buyer and have got a quote for the conveyancing. It seems a bit high to me, £700 plus VAT. The firm are solicitors but have a conveyancing department that does nothing else. It is years since I had any conveyancing done, is this price about average? Thanks.

Does that include searches? I'm paying 395 plus VAT plus searches total about 700-8000

Is there a mortgage on the property? If not, why not do the conveyancing yourself? Won't cost you more than the cost of the forms etc.

But OK - if you insist on using a solicitor, when shopping for quotes, readthis:

No mortgage on it. I must admit I am a bit nervous of doing the conveyancing myself. I have heard that if there are any problems with the buyer it can be tricky doing it one's self.0

I have just 'sold' my house, very similar circumstances- solicitor is charging £520 inc VAT. Also had another quote for £600 all in.
