business insurance

I have car insurance with Halifax and rang to add business cover to the policy as my daughter has started a new job in HR and may occasionally need to travel to another place of work. Imagine my surprise on being informed that they couldn't offer it as it would only apply to me as the policyholder and not my daughter. The upshot of this is that she can only do it by buying her own car and getting her own insurance. Has anyone any suggestions, please.

It's fairly normal that occasional drivers don't get business use. Usually just the policyholder/main driver and their spouse that get business use.

Have you tried a comparison site to see if anyone will quote for your new requirements?

Different insurers have different levels of business cover, normally you'd be wanting Class 2 as this covers the policyholder and named drivers.

Halifax is just a front for Budget insurance brokers and certainly their panel of insurers do include those that offer Class 2 but it sounds like the insurer they placed your business with doesnt, though I would double check this.

If they dont then your options are fairly limited and canceling this policy and rebuying is possible the best solution. Before buying elsewhere though check what the cancellation fees are and see if they are willing to waive them if you rebuy through them

Thanks for all replies. She does not drive to work every day but takes train and will only be going to another location on occasions. One solution would be either to get her own car(expensive) or transfer the existing car to her then cancel my insurance(expires in August) and take out new insurance in her name. Sting in the tail is that its only a short term contract and the whole department will be outsourced in September - thus no job.

She can tell her employer that she doesn't have access to a car with the correct insurance and that if they want her to go somewhere by car they'll have to hire her one.

I would also check what the 'class 2' actual wording is. Here is one definition.

"Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes and for the business of the Policyholder and the Policyholder’s employer or business partner excluding hiring, use in any competition, trial, performance test, race or trial of speed, including off-road events, whether between motor vehicles or otherwise, and irrespective of whether this takes place on any circuit or track, formed or otherwise, and regardless of any statutory authorisation of any such event, commercial travelling or for any purpose in connection with the motor trade."

If you read this, you will find that business use by the daughter (or indeed the spouse), is not covered unless they work for the same company as the policyholder.

Class 2 is designed for company vehicles, not for the purposes discussed above. (Commercial travelling is normally described as use by salesmen seeking orders, not by appointment) and motor trade use is always excluded from private motor policies. (Motor trade use would also cover such things as using the car to go to a supplier of motor vehicle parts (not private use) or visiting customer to valet/ steam clean their vehicles)
