Cheapest option to replace crazy paving

We have a patio (27 sq m) at the side of our house which is grey, broken, hideous crazy paving.
We've saved around £1000 to replace this but to be honest we're pretty clueless on what we can get for our money.
Two options we were considering:
Remove crazy paving and lay new patio - is this something a novice could do with step by step instructions?
Concrete over crazy paving using patterned concrete effect. We would need to get someone to do this.
Can either of these options fit into our 1k budget?
Or does anyone have any other suggestions?
