Don't be tempted by a Williams pear! I've just had to chop mine down as they are very susceptible to pear midge & there's NOTHING that will get rid of it! I tried for over 10 years (bl**dy minded) & followed all sorts of advice & nothing worked. So I'm looking at replacing with something else as I already have a nice apple & plum & a quince.

You can buy anytime when the trees are dormant - so between leaf fall and buds coming in spring. I don't see much point in growing things you can easily buy when there are so many varieties it is hard to buy.

I wouldn't be tempted to buy a potted tree now. By all accounts bare root trees planted this winter will outperform a potted tree planted now, as they have been allowed to grow properly. You can get two year old bare root trees, and the ones I received were in better condition than the potted ones in most local nurseries, except Longacres.

Some trees do okay in a heavier soil, some don't.

I'd recommend a full sized cherry stella, it's self pollinating and the cherry's are beautifully sweet, (a friend has one too). If trained you can keep it any size you want.

We've put a stella cherry in this year, we've got 4 cherries growing! :rotfl:

What about a fig tree? We have a white centered one but l'm also tempted to get a brown turkey one. They grow very easily.

If you get stuck for space how about training some fruit trees in as espaliers? (sp?)

    Happy moneysaving all.
