Help finding a cheap holiday for 6 in Scotland

Hoping for some help picking a cheap holiday within Scotland in July/early August during the school summer holidays. We don't want to camp or go in a caravan preferably as we end up constantly tripping over each other. We would like to be near a beach but not essential.
We don't want to go to somewhere like Haven as we did this last year and while it was initially cheap to book, all the added on activities ended up costing a fortune since we were paying for 4 kids at every activity. We are looking for somewhere we can relax but that has plenty to do nearby. The kids love wildlife so anything country like would also do. We're not looking for luxury accommodation but would prefer something of our own for example a lodge rather than a hotel.
Our only real requirement is that it is cheap as possible. The cheaper the better. We are on such a tight budget that I would like to go somewhere that we are not going to spend the whole holiday worrying about money so would like to be far enough from any attractions that we can pick and choose when to go to them and can hopefully even get a day or two spend free.

Perhaps try Hoseasons as they do lodges, cottages etc.
Anywhere I've booked through them arnt as full of gaming machines etc as Haven normally is.0 -

Look on ebay. How old are the children? Some place have lower age limits if ie. they are on a river bank, or have a pond.
What distance do you want to travel from home?0 -

The kids are 3, 6, 7 and 9 so quite young. Thanks for all the suggestions. I think we've found the perfect place on ebay, never even thought of looking on there so thanks very much for the idea.0
