I think it if you have been working hard to reduce your debts, are keeping on top of them and you can afford a short relaxing holiday you should have one. At the end of the day it is important to pay off debts quickly, but not at the expense of your own health and sanity. As such a short break to recharge the batteries, have fun, keep your relationship happy and come back refreshed to work even harder on your debts may be the right thing to do if you can afford it.
It would be wrong if you couldn't afford it or it meant going further into debt that will set you back 12 months or more to recover from it.

Get away, enjoy yourself, enjoy your partners time and then come back feeling like all this hard work saving and going without is worth it for small rewards like this.
  • Ooohh if you get back on 20th June, you must be going away soon :D:D

    Yeah this coming Monday

When I was paying off my DMP I still managed *some* holidays in the form of long weekends with family members paying for me OR I stopped with them.

In the 90 months I was paying off my DMP, I had the following breaks:

Bruges for my birthday c/o of my brother
London for my Dad`s 70th c/o of my sister
London c/o of my dad and a couple of trips to St Leonards On Sea to stay with my brother.

I am convinced having these holidays kept me sane during the duration of my DMP, because they were a break from the money saving daily grind !.

Like others, I would encourage you to have that holiday !.
  • Glad everyone seems to be in agreement of a break being deserved when you spend so much time saving and paying off debts :)

Let us know if you find a good deal..

My dad died aged 54 saving to go on his holiday of a lifetime, which he never had. As long as everything is done in moderation and you are paying off your debt and can budget in a holiday then go for it! The ones to be slated are those who increase debt with no intention of paying it off!

So sad and sorry to hear that! Where did he want to go?

I agree with everyone else - we are fantastically lucky to live in the age of cheap air travel. Go out and enjoy a bit, you only live once.

Nothing wrong with a week away if you are realistic over the fact it's not just the holiday you spend money on - e.g. possible airport parking, spending money etc.

If you were off taking 2-3 each year for 2 weeks at a time it would be a bit different.

I assume from your signature that you are not on a DMP?

As a single parent recently I haven't had any sort of holiday for 6 yrs! My folks are Australian so always went there every year. I simply haven't been able to afford 3 tickets & refuse going into debt to pay for it... Cash or nothing! If you feel you can afford it without going further into debt, well that's up to you. Me, I'd rather stay debt free than go home.

A little break is good for you and you can get some amazing deals if you shop around! One of my best holidays was last year - a week all inclusive in a 5* spa hotel (the AI was the best i've had, private beach, free sea kayaking and all sorts!) in Ibiza (not the clubby bit!) for £180pp - the only thing not included in this was airport parking! Such a bargain and because the AI was so good, I only spent a tenner in the week I was there and that was getting a bus in to Ibiza town and some lunch while I was there. It can definitely be done cheaply if you have the patience to look around!

With icelolly - it's great for a guide if you don't know where to go as you can do a wide search and it gives you temperature guides as well as prices but the prices shown get about £150 put on top (whenever I've phoned for a quote) for transfers and luggage.

Treat yourself to a well earned break and enjoy it! :D

I think as long as you are sensible, search round to get a good deal and don't blow a whole load of cash when you are there then go for it. We have had a little holiday every year since LBM sometimes you need a break to keep your sanity, well whats left of it!!

    Have fun!
