Hi guys,
We have a decent Dell pc at home but lately something has happened to it to really slow it down and applications are frequently crashing. To try and solve the problem I have so far tried doing the following:
- a defrag of the C drive,
- Panda online deep scan - no virus, no serious spyware or adware,
- adaware to clean,
- spyware search and destroy to clean,
- disk cleanup,
- removed programs that we haven't used in a while - no surprises on new applications,
- about to run ccleaner.
Any other suggestions as to what to do? We have about 44% of free space on the C drive so it doesn't seem to be a memory issue.
Many thanks for any advice and hope you're all having a nice Bank Holiday weekend.
Nicola

Might get more response if you give details of PC. i.e. which windows are you using-internet browser version-how much memory-what processor etc. (hold down windows key and press pause break key to get this info).
Have you cleaned out all temp internet files and cookies (internet options-tools).
Give Eusing registry cleaner a try.0 -
Run crapcleaner and if no improvment run Hijack This0

Was just about to post on the same subject! Exactly the same problem but with a Dell lap-top. Have tried all of the above but with no effect! I will be watching this post with great interest. Hope someone can help?0

I have a dell PC and it slowed down to loads after the first year. I saved all the documents I needed and wiped the whole computer then re-installed windows and all the necessary drivers. Works like a dream now. It didnt take that long either and if your unsure about what to do, dell will guide you through it over the phone.Yay!!! HSBC paid me £6910

Did it happen suddenly? If so, perhaps a Windows Update is the cause, for example:

Could also try a system restore in case it's a damaged file. Does it still run slowly if you reboot to safe mode?0

it can be start up items like quicktime etc that run in the background and take up resources
if you produce a hijackthis log for me Worc i'll take a look for you

Thanks for your posts so far.
I think Stompa might be on the right lines as we have automatic updates for windows and the problem did suddenly appear out of nowhere.
Programs seem to work ok once open but take ages to open up.
Going to run crapcleaner and hijack this.
Normally these kinda of problems can be easily attributed to bugs etc but this is the first time I've run all the scans and they're coming back clean.
fyi, I'm using XP professional and have a Dell Dimension DIM 4700 Intel Pentium 4 2.79ghz 0.99gb of RAM.0 -
Another way to gain some extra space is to delete all but the last restore point. I do this every month0
