Cat(s) weeing on the floor

Hullo everybody,

One or both of my cats started weeing on our mat which was infront of our front door. After cleaning the mat, buying them an extra litter tray and scrubbing their litter trays every few days; I eventually had to throw the offending mat out last night as one of them pooped on it.

This morning however, one of the little !!!!!!s decided to wee where the mat used to be! They definitely have enough litter trays, which are clean (I cleaned them yesterday evening), and are not exhibiting other behaviour which would lead me to believe they're stressed or unhappy. I'm taking them to the vets Friday to get them neutered (no other earlier appointments), and will also ask them to check for any urine infections etc whilst I'm there. This will hopefully stop the problem, but until then, I don't want them weeing in that spot any more! As far as I'm aware, they're doing it only when we're in (unless it dries by the time we're home from work, but it doesn't smell like it).

Has anybody got any suggestions of what to use in that area to deter them? I understand cats tend to wee in areas where they've already done their business, so I want to make sure it no longer smells like they should be going there! They don't mind the smell of orange peel, so that's out the question. I have also used some pet odour neutraliser on the area, but I sometimes use that around their litter trays also, so I'm not sure if that's helping or hindering the problem.

Any suggestions are welcome :) thank you!

i suspect that one or both wants to go out!

I think so too - but they're not going out until they're neutered and microchipped. I don't want them coming home pregnant, two cats is enough cats (for now!)

There is a product you can get that will neutralise the wee, or you can scrub the area with a biological powder and then surgical spirits.
Hopefully having them neutered will fix the problem, but sometimes it doesn't as a habit has already been formed.
My guess is there's a threat from another cat outside and your cat/s are weeing there to stake out their territory .

Thank you - I will have a look in the shops for something stronger. I wouldn't put it as a habit just yet, as the weeing was once in a blue moon, but the last two incidents were right after each other (maybe I didn't clear the smell well enough first time) and I'm hoping to nip it in the bud.

Unfortunately, we live in a ground floor flat and our front door goes into the communal area. There's no other cats in our block, so if they were marking their territory there maybe they're just trying to scare off the postman!

Try feeding them there. A bit inconvenient but it'll stop them.

I wish I could! The mat was right in front of the front door inside our hall, which means we'd have to move the place mat and bowls each time we want to go out the door/have visitors.

Edit: I know it's possible, but it's hard enough trying to stop two curious kittens shooting out the front door to greet the guests every time somebody comes to our door, let alone move their food too. They once got out and was climbing in the postman's bag whilst I was trying to sign for a parcel...

    Tin foil!

My cat went through a spell of peeing in an inappropriate place and, once the vet gave him a thorough examination and ruled out infection, we sprayed the area with a product whose name I can't remember (damn baby brain!). Basically, it is a product that removes all urine smells (even those that we can't detect). Cats hate the feel of tinfoil under their paws so, despite not being ideal for you, it keeps them away from the place. Just keep your eyes on them like a hawk should they move in to peeing in pastures new,

Thank you! I will put some down tonight when I'm back in from work and let you know. I'm just hoping they don't think it's another toy - they love scooting foil rolled up in a ball across the floor!
