Buildings/contents insurance renewal, just before building extension. Help?

We are in the process of remortgaging, to release funds to build an extension. Building work is due to start 1st July.
We've just realised our buildings/contents insurance is due to expire 14th June, so I rang to renew, said we were about to extend and the insurance was then declined.
I've just called two other insurers who say they will not take us on until the extension is finished.
But we can't get the remortgage without buildings insurance......
Anybody got any ideas?
I'm wondering if I'm phrasing anything incorrectly? They seem to suck in their teeth when I say the builders have access to the house and a wall will be demolished. (Well how else can an extension be built? They need to make an opening somewhere?)
We built an extension in our previous house and it wasn't an issue at all, otherwise I'd have looked to get the this sorted much earlier.
