As per Custardy, I've never heard of this either.

I would rather have my mail delivered without any hassle, if it means putting up with the small amount of [STRIKE]idiots[/STRIKE] doorstep sellers who choose to ignore my sign on the door.

I just don't answer the door!

As per Custardy, I've never heard of this either.

Some months ago, our local postman not only told me this, he showed me some pink/red slips he carried. He said he has to return the slips to the frame at the end of each working day.

Before deciding on a new gate with a combination lock, I spoke to the local delivery office and they confirmed that postal workers carry those special instruction slips with them on their rounds. They readily agreed to issue a special instruction with the combination lock number on it!

I have no doubt that postal workers at my local depot know how they operate, compared to those who clearly do not.

FYI, meter readers also carry 'special instructions'. Unlike Royal Mail, these are not on slips of paper but are included on the handheld computers they carry to enter meter readings. Again, I confirmed this before deciding to get a gate with a combination lock. It was readily agreed that my combination lock number could be included in those special instructions.

So you are referring to some posties then?

Yup the red hazard warning cards which are under trial
The existing special instruction cards are orange/brown and stay on the frames

Well I hope you have more luck with the PO than I do - their redirection service that I paid for for the past year has been absolutely dreadful with a lot of the post either not being redirected or going missing for months.

Not sure why you would prefer to be beaten on the head with a baseball bat in preference to having your details sold on.

Never once said I wanted to be beaten over head with baseball bat. Why do you live in fear of crime that's hardly going to happen if you think it will invest in a spy hole or just don't answer door.

Crime happens all the time. One of my elderly neighbours did not answer the door to a caller for the same reason you would not answer the door. That caller, who had just been released from prison, then banged on their window demanding they opened the door because he was selling door-to-door.

Had my neighbour been able to answer with an intercom or phone that may well have diffused the situation.

I answered my door to the very same person who attempted to push his way in when I would not buy from him.

We had other callers, gypsies, from Brigg - that whole family is now in prison - you can read about them here...

And even one of my former neighbours got arrested for murder, just weeks after I moved in after he shot someone with a gun.
