How old? Are you sure the account is still open and active? Even if it is, I doubt very much that they will transfer it into your name. Did your father leave a will, what happened to his estate when he died?

Just because you have a book does not mean that the account has not been closed.

Assuming that there are funds still in the account then the balance would have to be dealt with under the laws of inheritance. (as specified in any will or under the rules of intestacy)

If you do it without telling the bank then no... That is fraud and would not be a good thing to do as it would ruin you in the future for getting any credit.

There is also the matter of the tax status on the account.
Of course you will have to provide the death cert and proof of id for yourself.

If the account is solely in your late father's name then the realisation is the account would have to be closed and the closing balance paid to the executor. There is nothing stopping you opening the same (or similar) type of account with the bank for them to transfer the funds across to.

If the account was in joint names with your father then it may be possible to keep the account as normally the name is removed upon death and the account transferred to sole name.
