oh god, i forgot about them bringing worms back! i just thought my cat was particularly clever and was using it as bait! :rotfl:

we had those snap release collars for our boys and despite buying 3 or 4 each there isnt one to be found....
when they come in without it on one day you dont know wether they got into trouble and it snapped to save them swinging off a tree or if they got it off themselves (saw both of them do this)
    but either way... its gone!

both our local vets have advised against collars even those that are suposed to break if cat gets caught up they have seen too many injuries.think that anyone with cat(s) going outside will have to accept that their cute moggy is deep down a natural born killer.we have 3 cats and so far in last couple days have had at least 4 baby rabbits numerous rodents and few birds dumped in garden(these are the ones they brought home or didn't eat:eek: )no frogs (yet) it might be horrible and to some people cruel but at the end of the day its what most cats do.
    Lead us not into temptation...

just tell us where it is and we'll find it....

The cats I have kept have always had collars, adjusted so that three fingers fit snugly down the collar while it is being worn- if it is too tight the leastic bit can't stretch to let the cats' head through if it is caught, but if it is too slack then they get their paws then legs stuck in it.

You used to be able to buy mini cow bells for cats, I had one in addition to the bell for one of mine who liked to chase birds- never brought any home, but thought the birds did deserve a chance, he was a very fast kitty.

We don't have a cat any more, but one does turn up at the door and we always feed her.

Today she brought us a birds' nest...empty, but covered in little feathers.

you should NEVER feed a cat that turns up at your door. As with any animal it will soon learn to come to yours to get food. it then goes home and eats again. this patern is repeated, unknown to the original owner who ends up with an overweight and unhealthy animal.

another version of this ends up with the cat dieing as you fed it something it was allergic to. you don't know its medical history.

one of my friends luckily retrieved his cat from a cat rescue centre after a neightbour started to feed the cat. the neighbour then decided that as the cat had come back for the 4th day running it must be stray an handed it in to the centre. idiot!!!

as to the OP problem. like most have said, try a louder bell, if that doesn't work you can only either keep the cat inside or allow it to carry out its natural instinct.

with regard to collars our cats have collars with elasticated sections which allow then to slip their collars if needs be.

    Cheery.

If cats could talk, they would just tell you lies. ;)

If dogs could talk they would tell you whatever they thought you wanted to hear, they are so needy emotionally, they wouldn't dare disagree;)

You can now get collars that snap off if put under pressure. They are designed for the instance of a cat getting caught. Definately a usefull thing to have if your cats an outdoor one.

Even these are not 100% (most of the collars involved in wounding cats have elastic inserts, again meant to allow escape if they get caught). My cats have never worn collars and nothing would persuade me to risk it, I'm afraid.

I lost count of the number of people i had to stop feeding a cat that lived over the road from my shop,
it was a skinny ragged looking thing but that was due to its very strict diet as normal cat food could kill it... but people would see it, decide it needed feeding up and try and force food into the poor creature,
i realise that these people were just being nice... but you never know what harm you could be doing.

OMG I have duffer cat then.....he has never bought anything home!!

The only way he would eat a bird is if it sacrificed itself in his food bowl!!!

He spends his day, weather permitting, sat in the garden surrounded by birds of all shapes and sizes. If they get too close he toddles off to sit behind the plants in the borders!!!!! I think they really frighten him!!!

The only thing he has shown an interest in is a fly in the window and even then he didnt get it!!

He is a ginger tom by the way......this have any relevance??....used to have a black tom and he used to always bring birds/mice home.
