Moving on from MS Money? Online / Offline solutions

Hi Everyone.

I am trying to get my finances in order for the long term now I need to save for a wedding.

I had been using a excel spreadsheet to dump the electronic statement data for the numerous accounts and cards I have and I would need to weave them all together to get a picture of cash flow or net worth if you like.

This has become impossible to maintain and with so many accounts or cards needing to be on the go.

In the effort to get a constant picture of where my ‘net worth’ is I’ve been looking at trying to get my data into MS Money; although I know this is no longer supported and I will still have to manually import the data.

I have been looking and I know there are online account aggregators that will pull all your transactions into one place and plot cash flow/net worth graphs for you etc.

I am therefore looking for recommendations as a lot are only really useful to Americans and not UK bankers.

The important criteria, though none are a must.

1. Automatically importing some or most of my accounts/card transactions. Manual import in bulk is offered (i.e. upload of .CSV .QIF etc)
2. mobile access to view the accounts and possibly some of the stats via an iphone app or mobile optimized webpage.
3. The ability for it keep a long history of my old transactions. Some solutions seem to offer just 12 months.

Why don't people bother to have even the briefest look at what other threads might exist on the subject they want to post about, let alone use the search facilty?

OP, yours is the second thread started today on this subject, and there are many others if you can be bothered to look.

Fair enough. I'll be surprised if anyone can suggest something that hasn't already appeared in previous threads, but you never know, something new might come along.

PS Have you also searched the Techie board, the question comes up there quite often too?
  • I think I did a general search of the site not just this Forum.

Ive been looking at Moneydashboard, lovemoney, OnTreest, Yodlee, Check, Moneystrands and nothing ticks all the boxes yet.

The ability to bulk import data (historic or not) doesn't seem to feature anywhere so far.

Also I think only Yodlee shows a graph of your cumulative account balances i.e. net worth/cash flow over time.

You are trying to get your finances in order to save for a wedding and you are fretting about the ability to bulk import data?

It sounds a lot like you are looking for an interesting techie project, possibly as an avoidance device that will mean ducking the real issue :)

Honestly you don't need cash flow / net worth graphs to work out (a) where you are at the moment and (b) identify how much you can start saving towards The Big Day. What you have done in the past doesn't really matter at all, what matters is what you do from here on.

There is a review of 3 bits of budgetting software here http://doshandnosh.com/2013/04/budgeting-software/ In your position I would first use Clariman's calculator, because that is pretty easy and gives you a good 'Balance Sheet'., whereas too many things just look at cash flow.

Then if you want a 'companion' to help you move forward, then I have several friends who like YNAB.

Thanks for your comments....maybe I shoulf have worded my first post better.

I am looking to get a better handle on my money to best plan the wedding. but in a twofold manner I need to get a better control full stop. A spreadheet just isnt working for the overal account management. I dont need all that to budget and work out what we can save. But to easily and affectively monitor it right now is a good time for a complete solution.

....as I said, historical data isnt a must, but I like to see where Ive come and where I am going and my past and how aggressive I have save is good historical reference or comparison I like to see.

If i am going to make a step change in how I manage my money Id rather thing smart and meet two purposes in one go

Given what you're asking - I'd go with an offline product. I'm using Moneydance following the Microsoft Money withdrawl.

Works for me. Net worth graphs ... bulk import from QIF ... But it's offline.

Can sync files onto an iphone though.

Oh - and worth noting that it was *almost* perfect at importing my historical microsoft money file when I followed their instructions to the letter.
