Wooden worktops

We had solid wood butchers block type effect worktops installed with our kitchen. (from a certain company with a name that begins with M) and the cowboy installers did not seal it properly round the taps. Once water got in that was it - ruined, but of course took a few years for the resultant damage to make itself known. Have just had all worktops replaced by a local joiner. Solid oak, lovingly oiled about 6 times so far by us, and will be gone over regularly. Looks superb. We all evolve - get on with it0

Just for anyone reading this thread, we have Luxore surfaces fitted by Whitehall Fabrications although bought from MFI. They have been a sore dissapointment. They have scratched been damaged by heat, lost chips and crumbled round the beveled edge where they were actually used. They are very very beautuful but only for showrooms I fear. To top it all a few days ago our underhung sink fell out:eek:
It had only been glued in. All in all my once in a lifetime kitchen renovation is a sorry disaster because of this surface and company.0 -
can anyone suggest the best oil or wax to use on oak worktops? thanks:beer:0

We used boiled linseed oil on oak, but my parents have had sycamore worktops for 30 years and my mother swears by ajax! but they have stainless steel around the sink area so water never settles on the wood0

Did my last house with oak worktops and found them a bit of a pain. They seemed to dry out around the Belfast sink quite quickly and needed oiling regularly but this may have been due to a south facing roof light directly above that area.
I sold the house to a mate and he thinks they are a pain too.Look lovely but need oiling too often is his opinion.
Danish oil is the stuff to use in my opinion, although my mate has tried waxing them this time to see if that makes a difference.0
