If your no claims bonus is not protected, different insurers will have different step backs (number of years).

    What does this mean?

So even if a claim is non fault, until it is settled, NCB doesn't apply. And this is know as having the ncb "stepped back" ?

    I've seen fake ncb before.

How & where? How did you know it was fake?

i remember someone trying to pass a "norwich union" letter headed paper ncb for 2012. they changed to aviva and they couldn't locate the policy!

So Aviva rang Norwich Union and NU couldn't find the policy?>

    Another idea.
Say my family just moved to the UK from Europe.
My dad has a Nissan. Owned for about 6 months.
I've been put on as an additional driver on the policy. I don't have a car.
Dad then sells and buys a Vauxhall. Takes me off the policy for the new car as its cheaper.
He's going to earn his first full NCD bonus within 2-3 months.

    Now,
    1. Can I rejoin the policy after being off it for 2 months? (Yes)
    2. When I rejoin, and dad gets his NCD, will I be eligible for that NCD even though I was removed and then tacked on again?
    3. I understand that I will/may have to stick to the current insurer, that's fine.
    4. Which companies accept motorcycle NCD for a car?

    1) Yes you can be added as a named driver, assuming your driving license allows you to drive in the UK

    2) Named Drivers do not earn NCD, only the Policyholder (for almost all insurers but a tiny percentage have the Main Driver) do. A few insurers allow named drivers to receive "NDNCD" but this is not recognised generally outside of that insurer. You would need to ask those insurers that offer NDNCD how this applies to a ND added mid term to a policy

    3) Yes, as above. You may well however find it cheaper to get a policy elsewhere declaring 0 NCD than staying with the same insurer as your father with just one years NDNCD

    4) There are a fair few that do, some of the aggregators allow you to specify where the NCD has come from (car, bike, company car, europe) and therefore would return appropriate quotes. Add to that Direct Line who arent on aggregators

    1)
E.g. - You have 7 years unprotected NCB. Claim is open (regardless of fault or non fault). Some insurers will step this back to 3. Others may step it back to 5. Some start their step back from 5 (if you NCB is above this). The most common case is losing 2 years NCB. Some might just remove all NCB.

Some don't understand either the reinstatement.
7 stepped back to 3 to be reinstated to 8 if it was closed/settled non fault.

Basically, the to us it will appear random, but the underwriter, they do have the same rules on certain schemes.

    2) I work in insurance, just admin role.

    3) Aviva are Norwich Union now rebranded/taken over. The rebranding means that their letters have changed, so if you still have some oldstyle letters appearing in 2012, you know something is fishy.

You usually have to be over 25 to be able to take NCD protection, (and minimum to be able to protect usually 4 years)

Direct line don't have an age restriction but do require 4 yrs NCD.

There are a lot of anomolies. DS1 (=eldest son for those that don't know the jargon) had car before he passed his test. Insured with him as main driver no problem. When it came to renew he had 1 year NCD, except that lots of insurers systems couldn't accept that you could have a whole year NCD when you had only passed your test 10 months ago. This keeps repeating each year, now 5yrs NCD but only been driving for 4 yrs 10 mths causes hiccups in the system.

"driving experience" is a very loose term. DS1 had a car he left at home while he was at uni. Admiral even gave a discount for this. So most of the year he was either at uni or travelling, yet he was building "driving experience" and NCD without being near the car.
