A few months back a 70yr old chap said to me, "At my age a pound saved is a pound wasted". Might be something in that too...............

    Hi

Well, there might be. It just depends on how you look at everything. A philosophical question, really.

I guess the gentleman meant that he wouldn't have that £1 saved to enjoy now and that he saw no future ahead for which the £1 might be useful. But that doesn't apply to us - we haven't finished living yet, we do have plans for the future, even if our future may not be long. And it's always better to be able to draw on savings rather than having to borrow, or having to do without things.

There's a lot of difference in philosophy, outlook, view of life, between older people of the same age. This is what younger people can't understand - they see us as all the same.

No it is not humorous, nor polite.

My own opinion is that in a perfect situation, I would be 50/50, enjoying life NOW, and saving for the future, in equal amounts. Because you can't predict the future, it may end tomorrow for me. On the other hand, you can't take it with you. No, that's a different subject. Achieving balance and harmony, that's it.

Yes, I totally agree with you. and I know you can't predict the future. I should know that better than most - it's just coming up to the 2nd anniversary of my younger daughter's death. She was just 39 and died very unexpectedly and suddenly from an undiagnosed heart defect that she'd had since birth - it was just like a ticking time-bomb. Being the methodical person she was, she'd left all her affairs in order so the mortgage got paid off.

We are deffo going to have to change this car for an automatic - I have a painful ankle (reason not known) which is going to make using the clutch very difficult. Luckily we have some savings...

    Best wishes
