1st Credit Letter concern

Options
Hi,

We returned from holiday yesterday to a letter from 1st Credit asking my husband to get in touch with them! The letter was dated 21st May and asked him to get in touch within 10 days confirming that he is at this address. If not they would assume that he is at "this" address and be back in touch. Reading threads I understand they are a debit collection agency! We have lived at our current address for 13 years and have no outstanding debits! I am worried what they have on him! What are they going to drag up? My husband has had problems with money in the past but all debits were cleared when we first got together 14 years ago! As advised I haven't got in touch with them as then they have something on you! Should I return the letter saying not at this address, but surely I would then be a liar? :(

He definitely doesn't have any debts? More of interest, in the last 6 years?

If definitely not then I would ignore until they write again, a fishing trip most likely for a Statute Barred Debt!

No we have no debits at all! :-( letters like this are scary though! His name is a popular name so are they writing in the off chance!?

I would await further letters then ask again for advice, there is a number of things you can do, I wouldn't stress over it at this moment.

It may well be, best just ignore unless they write again...

even if the debt is his, it will be Statute Barred...

Unless they write with proper details of what they are after, then I would just ignore.

They should not be assuming that no response = you are who they are after. That is very naughty, but probably not worth a complaint at this stage.

As said, if the debt was yours it would likely be statute barred anyway.

One thing that may an idea to do is check your credit files. If they think they do have the right person, then they may have placed something nasty like a default on there. If they have, then that may change matters as you would want that removed.

Yes, it would be appreciated as others search for the same issue will already have an idea of the solution.

No harm in asking them what it is all about?

Best to do nothing unless they persist...

however checking your credit files is definitely advisable to see if things are amiss on there.

    Yes there is.......

they wont discuss it until you tell them who you are and get all your details. they quote data protection and all sorts and if your not carefull you can end up admitting you owe a debt you either don't or is statute barred.

They rely on this, the best course of action is just ignore their letters, the next one will probably say they know who are and that you are living at your address. You owe them £xxxx and need to contact them to make an arrangement to pay.

If you know you don't owe anything within the last 6 years, tell them nothing, just ignore the letters. It is a try on to get you to arrange to pay something you may well not owe and if its over 6 years ago, its statute barred.

I started to worry myself to death when this started to happen to me, just as I was turning myself around and getting back on my feet. Yes it is a worry but at the end of the day, it is a letter, just ignore it. They know it is unenforceable and are relying on you saying okay, how much here's a cheque.

The reason for the fishing is to get you to bite.
