Ferries, passport and name change

I got married a few months ago, and had been planning to change my passport over to my married surname before going on holiday in August. We are taking a ferry to Calais.

Having seen the cost for renewal of a passport I am tempted to change my mind - it will be £75, which is more than the cost of the ferry ticket for both me and my husband!

Can I keep my passport in my maiden name if I'm going on a ferry? I haven't booked the tickets yet, so surely I could book them in my maiden name, so that they match? We'll be going from Dover to cologne, so pass through passport control (we presume) between France and Germany.

Does anyone have any prior experience of this?

Thanks!

Even better - so no real need to change the passport at all then?

No need anyway so long as you book things in your maiden name, it's not against the law and there is no obligation to change your surname on marriage, it's a choice.

As long as you always book using your maiden name you can carry on using your passport until it expires no matter what mode of travel you use.

Well thanks very much! I shall not bother replacing the passport and shall book it all under maiden name.

we're booked to go to Belguim for the day in a couple of weeks and it only asked me how many passengers adults children infants etc. I swear I didn't put any names apart from my own as the booker.

edited to add I just checked our booking and there are no names, it just states 4 adults 1 child.
  • I travelled to France for 5 years with my passport in my maiden name. just put my marriage certificate inside. Never had a problem. Holiday always booked in married name.

No you won't need to pass through passport control after you've done it at the Chennel. As you drive on the motorway between France and Germany you can go via Belgium and pass through the Maastricht area in Holland without much fuss at all.

Other threads will tell you the cheap places near the Belgian/French border for buying booze/ciggies on the way back although Caliais itself is awash with stores mainly specialising in what we'd formerly have called duty-free. Can I recommend the Brussels IKEA as a motorway stop, in Maastricht you can visit what's probably the biggest hill in the netherlands, and in Cologne, visit the chocolate factory! Enjoy your trip!
