Part-time workers - positive discrimination?

So let me see, I have kids and my employer wants me to work over and above my hours, no extra money, but I can perhaps get the time back in the summer holidays, Now to do these extra hours I am going to have to find childcare and this will cost me either financially or in favours. Really attractive incentive that!0

My son isn't school age yet, and I love being able to take my holidays outside the school hols! (Well, I did until I decided to retrain as a teacher...)
I see exactly why some companies give school summer hols to those with kids, as otherwise they'd end up with too many taking days off sick!
If you aren't resricted to school holidays, relish it!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

You can't just assume that having no children means you're completely flexible and have no other commitments or responsibilities.
I was not assuming complete flexibility just that preferance may be to holidaying in quieter/less expensive times. As you say there are other commitments.
In regards to weather I find that May and June and often September is usually nicer than the summer hols weather anyway. I think we would all prefer a choice.
In my earlier post I was replying to someone who seemed to think part timers are all off work at the drop of a hat for school plays etc. I was pointing out that in my situation I more often than not am covering for a colleague thats off sick!
Having said that I do think its unfair of the op's firm. That there are those that booked holiday and didn't get 1st choice. Yet there are days being offered to other staff.Back on the trains again!0 -
In my previous job, when I was a full timer, it was far easier for part timers with children to book holiday time in the summer.
For one thing, people without children felt obliged to avoid asking for time off in the summer holidays.
Also it was allowed for a part timer to be off at the same time as another part timer or full timer. But there couldn't be two full timers off at the same time. So it was easier for part timers to get time off.
I was told, that as a full timer without children it was quite reasonable for me to have my main two weeks off in November or February!Early retired - 18th December 2014

i wouldn't mind taking holidays outside of the school holidays but i was restricted to my summer holiday being half in april and half in novemeber as that was the only times i could actually book off.
i couldn't even get my birthday off work coz it happens to be in december.
luckily thats all behind me now thou and i get proper holidays and can choose when i take them0
