Replacement freezer in rented accomodation

Hi guys;

Well Ive finally confirmed it: my freezer is indeed not working properly.

It seems that it is freezing, thawing and then refreezing food which obviously is problematic,

Furthermore, it is an absolutely ancient model, and it is a fridge/freezer combo, with the freezer being nothing but a singular tray, barely enough for two pizzas.

I am currently living in rented accomodation. Legally,and under the terms of the tenancy agreement, the landlord would be obliged to ensure that the freezer was replaced.

However, I have sourced a very affordable freezer myself, which is perfect for requirements in terms of its volume, well within my budget, and most crucially, very economic with running costs (estimated at £19 per year).

The reason I am reluctant to inform the landlord and get him to replace the freezer is the fear that he will go for the cheapest model possible, i.e. a second hand model which is not energy effecient....and which also happens to suffer from the limited space as well. The limited space is a major issue, given that I have mobility issues, live up three flights of stairs, and have severe anxiety and arthritis. Ergo, having a stockpile of food is essential, esp. come winter.

By purchasing the new freezer myself, I own it. I'll keep the old freezer, leave it in the bedsit, and just plug in the new freezer, taking my new freezer away with me when the lease ends/I move out.

Can anyone please advise?

I don't want to alienate my landlord, he has been very pleasant thus far, but I don't want to cause undue trouble or pressure for him. I am looking to be in the property long term.

PS: I live in Scotland!

    If you wish to use your own white goods in your home the landlord can't stop you.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    Contact your landlord, you need to do this before you dispose or remove his old freezer. In the same message tell him that you are happy to purchase your own. I can't foresee any problem or at least there shouldn't be!

    My ex and I rented a place and the only electrical things included in the rent were the cooker and old f/f.

    We did contact the agency about 6 months after moving in as some food was getting ruined (pizzas soggy, things with black spots etc) we managed to get an ex-display model f/f at Comet. The agency agreed to cover the costs of the f/f. We did a bit of talking and got £25 off and free delivery.
