Very confused.. which credit card??

I have never had a credit card, always found the concept scary, but think I may be missing a trick as the cash back concept seems a good reason. But I find it all very confusing, I think I want too much.. Id like a cash back card that will automatically direct debit to clear each month, I would also like a card to save us taking travellers cheques abroad, we go to Turkey later in the year.
We have no debts and fortunately have never had any. We have a mortgage which we overpay every month. We both work in the public sector and believe that our jobs are safe and income good.
I have read all the bits on the site but it seems that a card wouldn't do both of what I want it to do? So my question is, please can someone explain what card would be most suitable? I have a normal Debit card (could I use that abroad?)
Thanks in advance

It very much depends what you want it for?
Most credit cards you can use abroad.
If you are going to use it and repay in full every month who cares what card it is as the interest rate will not matter. You will be paying it off.
If you have not had one before maybe see what your bank offers?3 Children - 2004 :heart2: 2014 :heart2: 2017 :heart2:

My concern is the rate they will charge for overseas transactions. I don't want to get stung.
I was thinking I would buy all my groceries and petrol on it, in order to get the cashback. I spend £500 on groceries and about £150 on petrol, plus the usual other bits and pieces.Morgage till Nov 30 GOAL MFW Sept 2016Aug 11 - £100k Aug 2016.... It's GONE!!!!!

You'd probably need two cards. The best card for a broad is a Halifax clarity generally, but it sounds as though you might have a thin file and they are fairly picky with this. If you bank with Halifax then you would have a good chance, if you have a reward account you would get 5£ per month for using as your main account and £5 for the credit card if you out £300 a month or more through it.
If you don't do the above then is all your spend through a particular shop, if so the cards issued by tesco, sainsbury etc might be the est option.
In terms of holiday money then nothing is free, if you don't pay a fee then you get hit on theexchange rate.0 -

Thanks B.
I was thinking of the Asda one and looked at that one today, as that's my main shop for groceries and petrol plus they include free delivery on shops over £125, for the cash back element.
My main account is with Natwest.Morgage till Nov 30 GOAL MFW Sept 2016Aug 11 - £100k Aug 2016.... It's GONE!!!!!
