Oh, well, assuming that's not the case, they're talking b*llocks.urs sinserly,

Well I've used my co-op credit card and debit card several times over the weekend with no problem.
And what a ridiculous OTT post header.
Also note OP was struggling to get a Co-op cashminder account a few weeks ago because of a self-confessed bad credit record; now he has an account with £10K in it??
Yeah rightEthical moneysaver0 -
£385 for a train ticket - was this the Orient Express???"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

It's 2013! This shouldn't be happening, an hour or two is fair enough, but 1/2 days of technical issues isn't on.
They could have a (hardware independant) secondary authorisation system! If 1 fails at least there's a fall back
Coop has a captive market with their Cashminder account. It's coop or no banking facilities!
It may not be the actual system that went down. It could be something like someone digging up the cables that route to the auth center.
There is only so much redundant back up's that can be put in place.
I know its hard on you, but such is life. How do you think it was for the staff at co-op who had to deal with this.
There are now so many systems in banking that are cobbled together that have to talk to each other.
It needs every bank to totally update all their internal systems to new ones.
Sadly that will never happen for many reasons.
Cost, staff training, risk of loss of date etc.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
The easy answer is have a backup account of somekind.
Even just a plain, boring savings account elsewhere with an ATM card. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Yeah right
Credit rating not a problem other than defaults. If you actually read my previous posts you'll find that I joined MSE to try and find out other reasons why I was being rejected.
That has since been put down to not being on the electoral roll, having moved house regularly and (apparently) inconsistent information given to banks or something called CIFAS.
Other bank accounts don't come with full debit card.
I have a very good job with high earnings, £2k+ a month after stoppages.
£385 was a Helsby to London First Anytime Return. (Hence username "first class" )0 -

So why the whinging about not being able to get a backup account/card?0 -
Strange that MSE doesn't think a Co-op "meltdown" is newsworthy yet temporary glitch with NatWest mobile banking is headline news!0

The Co-op problem wasn't really a meltdown - it impacted around 15% of their customers one Sunday afternoon.
The Natwest one was more significant because:- Natwest's customer base is far, far bigger than 15% of Co-op's customers
- Natwest have IT problems every few months - Co-op's is (hopefully) a one-off

Numbers are neither here nor there. People depend on electronic access to their money. Having another bank account doesn't always solve the problem. Banks need to keep these critical systems working - they mustn't get into the habit of thinking that downtime is acceptable. The Co-op problem wasn't really a meltdown - it impacted around 15% of their customers one Sunday afternoon.
(Nor do we want them thinking "this'll only hit the pond scum with online cards")
The basic problem with the banks is their complete lack of respect for customers.
Can compensation be claimed for the consequences of a debit card not working?"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0
