Poor quality kettle finish

i have been given as a present a Next Kettle and toaster set. I descaled the kettle, accidentally spilling some of the descaler on the kettle. Tried to wipe it off gently and it stripped the colour off the kettle revealing the metal underneath. Obviuosly my fault, but I don't think the kettle coating should come off so easily. surely most people use a descaling product and may get some on kettle, have done it on another coloured kettle with no removal of the outer colour. think it is poorly manufactured and have told Next but all they say is it was my fault and not a manufacturing fault. I agree that I did it but would never have expected to ruin my kettle's outer skin using an ordinary made for kettles product. Surely the kettle should withstand a little descaler. Has anyone else had this happen?

I would say it is your fault in all honesty. I have never got descaler on a kettle outer.
Especially careful when using it in a non stainless steel kettle and a "finished" one.
A lot of finished kettles do come with a warning not to use abrasives on the outside, just a warm cloth and water.
Descaler is after all designed to break down and remove lime scale, so it's quite harsh, wiping it probably exacerbated the problem by rubbing it in.0 -
I hardly dare say I agree with Tinkerbell (because someone else keeps having a pop at me) but I do. Chances are the descaler is acidic (to counteract the limescale) and should be handled with caution.
However - I'm presuming you have been to a store with the kettle?
What I would do is write to their Quality Control Dept (via their Head Office address) and tell them how thrilled you were to have received this kettle/toaster set as a gift, and how disappointed you are that the finish has been damaged by kettle descaler which you were using to keep the kettle in good condition because you love it so much. And how you regularly shop at Next and until now you have never, ever been disappointed with any of their goods/homewares.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

It'd be classed as accidental damage, a mishap, and this isn't covered under your 12 months guarantee, so they are right in saying that you are not covered.
As tinkerbell says, it's quite a harsh product, so yes, it more than likely will ate the paint/coating off.0 -
Have you seen what coke can do!0

How can you blame the finish being poor when you damaged it?!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0

Just out of interest - if you check the contents on a packet of kettle descaler it's normally just citric acid.
It's much cheaper to just buy citric acid itself (chemist or home brew shop) - 50g into a half filled (and boiled) kettle & Bob's your uncle!0 -
