asda smart parking fine 21/3/13

hi can someone please help me. On 21/5/13 i parked in asda and in a rush i didnt pay and display(i only shopped in asda). Upon my return to my horror i found a smart parking pcn on my windscreen demanding £70.00 or £40.00if paid within 14 days etc. I rang them up next day but my tkt was not on system yet and since i have been researching on web and not paid up but have only 2 days and then the £40.00 will expire. Ok i should have displayed, my mistake but i cant afford to pay £40.00 and certainly not any more than that. What should i do some links say ignore and dont pay others say write and appeal. Can they take me to court? Ive not done something like this before! Please someone reply honestly and genuinely, we all amke silly mistakes. Thankyou:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
