Need URGENT advice re rabbits please

Morning

Looking after a friends rabbits for a week, and one of them has VERY overgrown nails. I have cut my cats claws, have gullotine cutters, and I think they have a pair but I am not sure where they are.

I have googled how to cut them but advice varies from like a cats to use pliers to cut them. She is a timid rabbit anyway but is happy to be held upside down and cuddled so I think I will be ok. Can anyone who has cut a rabbits nails that ar so overgrown before tell me the best way to do it?
(Do I trim every couple of days, take a load off now?)

She isnt moving around too much at the moment and i assume thisis because it is uncomfortable for her to do so, I have turfed her down the ramp by her food and water but am worried about leaving her til they gt back on Friday.

Many thanks, and I hope someone can help.

One is twisty and the others are starting to curl. Their owner may be grumpy when she gets back if I do it, but I am damned if I am leaving them like that.

So just like a cats? Cut them to where they need to be? I did read take a torch to be able to see the quick so think I will do that! Are they hard to cut? Cats claws seem quite soft.

    Thanks for the reply.

If the nails are clear then you can see where to cut up to as you can see the pink bit inside the nail, cut below this and it's probably better to do it in one go than to stress the rabbit doing it again, unless he/she is very docile. if they are black however it may be more difficult.
wrapped in a towel could be a good idea as often they wriggle when they hear or feel the snip, stick one paw out at a time.
If you feel you cannot do it yourself then ask a local pet shop or dog groomers and often they will do it for free or around a fiver if they charge.

I think I am ok to do it, just cos they are not my pets I need to make sure I do it right first time as I cant keep an eye on them all day. (IYKWIM).

    Thankyou

Here is some information on trimming rabbits nails: http://www.hrss.net/aar/care/care_groom_trimnails.html

If you nick the quick don't panic, just press a pinch of flour or cornflour against the nail to stop the bleeding. That worked when my rabbit caught her nail.

I'd go with others here, if you can cut a cat's claws it is the same principle, we use the guillotine clippers but that is just personal preference.

I caught the quick on one of ours the other day because she kicked just as I was clipping, not the best thing in the world but certainly not the end of the world ;)

Are you going to tell the owner you've done it? I think you should. It's her/his lack of attention that's meant the claws have grown too long. Poor bunny :(

Oh def going to tell her. We have a lovely relationship and I wont worry at all about it. She has been known to clean my guinea pigs out when I went away as I forgot!!

I cut a claw, the rabbit went nuts. I have made sure it is on the level where the water and food are, covered the floor with hay so it soft and will be leaving her a note for the morning when they are back telling her what I have done and will pop over Monday for a natter. She will have done the other claws by then.

I feel awful leaving them but got the longest one and really don't want to stress the rabbit out. She hardly knows me as it is...now I am so psycho with a cutter and towel!!
