ipod- would you believe i cant remember how to do it!!

last year i got daughter an ipod and i fiidled for a bit and got it to work and can also download on to it etc.. BUT
hubby has got one now and wud you believe i cant remember what i did!! please can anyone refresh my (failing) memory. thank you

Compatibility with Windows Vista

iTunes 7.1.1 addresses a number of known compatibility issues with Windows Vista. Apple is actively working with Microsoft to resolve a few remaining known issues, including:

• Ejecting iPod from Windows Explorer or by using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows Vista may corrupt your iPod. Microsoft is working on a software update for Windows Vista which addresses this compatibility issue. Apple recommends Windows Vista customers who own an iPod install this software update when it becomes available, click here for more information. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes.
• iTunes may display text or graphics incorrectly on your screen. Resizing the iTunes window should correct this issue.
• Contact Groups from Windows Contacts will not sync with iPod.
• iTunes remains unsupported on 64 bit editions of Windows, including Windows Vista and Windows XP x64.

I hate iTunes, it installs a lot of crap that you don't need, e.g. QuickTime even though the iPod Shuffle isn't a video player.
I use Yamipod now:

But you can also pretty much anything which has an iPod plugin, e.g. WinAmp.

However, if your iPod becomes corrupt for some reason, I don't know any alternative to iTunes to reset it.
