Is it a proper Chimney breast with an actual chimney outside? If so then it will be brick to support the weight. You may have just struck the mortar bond between bricks. If no proper chimney then it could be just stud and plaster board covering a flue for a gas fire.

Not sure what the chimney is made of in your house, but if it's a proper fireplace, it ought to be pretty solid!

&, I'd love a flatscreen tv, but all these hanging over the fireplace, positioning, is this REALLY trhe best place? Even gas fires will send some heat & stuff upwards, so can't be good for the tv, long term!!

Quite probably a Lintel or RSJ that is placed over a gap to continue building upwards.

You may need to use a batten secured near the corners of the chimney breast, then hang the TV on that.

I'd go back to primary school to learn how to spell properly before you even attempt any DIY.

hkt7383: Being so intellegent you must allready know there are probably good reasions I cannot spell, can I recomend you have another think about them.

titewad: Would you expect the RSJ/Lintal to go allthe way across the wall?
Ive got 5 holes that are in a line across the wall, the central one (also in the center of the wall) is deep enough.
On the other row of holes I have the ones on the left side of the wall cant go deep enougth but the ones on the right are ok.

HugoSP: It is looking that way :(

    cheers
