Laptop - fit for purpose?

How long is it reasonable to expect a (Sony) laptop (specifically the keyboard) to last?
I bought it in Nov 2010 so the 2 year warranty expired 6 months ago, but I'd expect a £500 laptop to have a better lifespan than this.
Am I being over-optimistic?

I'd expect much longer than that, was it bought on the high street? If it was I'd try taking it back and seeing what they offer you. If not I'd take it up with the manufacturer.0

Whats up with the keyboard?0

Meh depends tbh. Sony laptops fwiw aren't that robust. One year I got one for my birthday....about £800. The charger bit hangs off like a dud after a year or 2.
Luckily my Oh is in this "field" so he can pretty much fix anything, so I wasn't to bothered about raising it with Sony. I use it as a spare now as it is crap and got a mac.
The thing is £500 isn't a huge amount over 2 1/2 years. Keyboards face a lot of wear and tear, plus damage.
So you'd have to prove it was an inherent fault if your initial contact with the place you purchased is fruitless. That's your first point of call.0 -
It's worth a shot taking it back, you might just get that nice unusually understanding and friendly member of staff who wants to help you.
Good luck0 -
Interesting as someone knocking out a million words per year would obviously expect less longevity than a keyboard pecker.
I would try a support request to Sony but ultimately I think a keyboard is "consumable" in that different people will wear them out at a much different rate. My Sony laptop is into its third year OK.
FWIW I have hardly ever had a keyboard fail even after many years, apart from when something gets lodged under the keys. If your Sony is a typical chiclet then it's doubtful anything is in there. Should you decide to take it apart be very careful - very easy to lose bits of the mechanism that will fall out0 -

Sony is just a big name, like everyone else they just design the case, the parts inside are all from the same few big manufaturers, Intel, kingstone etc.
These companies just have the components installed into their own cases, buy on spec not name, Sony overcharge for their name.0 -

(A pain going back and adding the spaces!)
To be fair, it gets a lot of use.
Came from a local independant retailer so I'm hoping they'll be good on customer service/reputation, but just wanted views before I go in tomorrow on what's fair to ask for.0
