Buying a new car
Hi,
I have just been to a garage to purchase a new car with my husband. We saw a car and paid a £100 deposit. My husband went into the garage and signed an order form. When he came back he told me that if we pull out of the agreement we have to pay 5% of the total value of the car which is £11000. I was not happy especially as he did not have a copy of the contract with him. I rang them 15 minutes after we had left to cancel the contract, we told them we had seen the car cheaper elsewhere but I was really annoyed by the contract, and also that my husband didn't even receive a copy of it.
They have told me the agreement stands and if I pull out for any reason I will lose the £100 pound deposit and will also have to pay approx. £670 penalty for the % of the car. He also said that they have successfully pursued this in the past and have won.
Have I got to accept this and either purchase the car or pay the money, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wow- if they stitching you up on the purchase, imagine how bad the service will be after you get the car if you have a problem. Disgraceful.0

Are you serious? If you weren't sure you wanted to buy the car then why did you pay a deposit and sign a contract to do so? The cancellation terms should be completely irrelevant.0

I want the car, but don't agree with being held to ransom for it, also we told them that the sale would be dependant on getting the relevant finance for it0

How did you pay the deposit? Was it by credit card?? This is important, as you may have a 14 day cooling off period.
You may also have a 5 day cooling off period anyway, you need to find out asap.
The garage sound like robbing little...0 -
We paid by switch card0

Assuming you do still want the car I'd stop worrying about this, it makes no difference! Pushing this will just get you stressed, and annoy the staff at the garage you are buying the car from.
Edit: unless you can't get the finance sorted I suppose...0 -
Yeah I know Ultrasonic you are right, but I didn't realise I had committed to buying the car, I thought we had paid a deposit so they would hold the car until Monday so we could then begin proceedings to purchase the car.0

I guess you didn't read what you signed then?Yeah I know Ultrasonic you are right, but I didn't realise I had committed to buying the car, I thought we had paid a deposit so they would hold the car until Monday so we could then begin proceedings to purchase the car.You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
You said your husband went down to the garage to SIGN an order form and pay a deposit.
Really cant understand what you are moaning at?
You order something, pay a deposit. the garage then orders what you have ordered. If you then decide you don't want it. they will be stuck with it.
Why should it not cost you money if you pull out of the deal?.0
