I've got one on a back tooth and it was fine, didn't feel a thing and not had any problems since. My crown is also tooth coloured and that was done on the nhs.

I've had two root canals and personally think they are less unpleasant than having a big filling done (less of the horrible vibrating drill). The only problem I had with both of them was I got a sore head from being upside down in the chair for 50 minutes each time. I found it helpful to read up on the procedure beforehand. There are a lot of funny instruments and stuff used and I found it easier knowing roughly what they were. Obviously, some people might not find this helpful!

Take an ipod with you for the root canal. Really helps to take your mind off things (as long as you haven't downloaded something that makes you laugh like a drain.)
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Antibiotics worked for mine, and the dentist wouldn't do the root canal until the abscess had gone.

You're very lucky to have no pain!

yep. I had one done a couple of years ago as I had a buccal sinus (the soft lump that fills with puss on the gum). I had no pain though. our dentist is a training school for the university dental students and so I had the option of having it done by a final year dental student. I can honestly say that it was the least traumatic dental experience that I have ever had. I couldn't praise him enough! the whole procedure took about an hour, you have a rubber dam placed in part of your mouth, and the files that they use to clear out the roots will be tied to your clothing to prevent you from swallowing them. I didn't find it bad at all,but then I am very tolerant of dentist etc. the other bonus was that having it done by a dental student cost me 40 odd quid instead of hundreds. Good luck with it.

Be very very very careful of a tooth abscesses as someone very close nearly died of one when it traveled up to the brain via the frontal sinus and caused exstensive osteomyalitis and they ended up in a decompression chamber and 9 operations later and 13 years they are still under a neurosurgeon.
    Do not ignore tooth abscesses.
They have a big hole in the front skull as a result..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I've had a number of root canals done due to abscesses and in all cases the abscesses hurt more than the dental work. The problem that I've had is that the amount of tooth left is very thin & as such prone to damage & several have cracked

  • I would rather go through a root canal than the worry of where the abscess infection could travel too.

As op above says don't ignore this go and get it over with.

I had one bottom molar and it was painful at times getting it done. the dentist said it was just air causing the pain?? Anyway it was NOTHING comapred to the pain it was causing me before that! I did end up having the whole tooth out eventually though as the amount of filling didnt feel right in my mouth.
Mine was caused through a broken molar to begin with.

Definately don't ignore absesses as I developed osteomyalitis (sp?) in my lower jaw, as a result of an absess, I needed 2 teeth removing and 2 operations. (not trying to scare anyone just think its important people realise how serious they can be.

I've had root canal work done once and its not too bad, the worst bit is the time it takes in the dentists chair.
