House Deeds. Where do you keep them and how much does this cost?

    The Office copies you download from the Land Registry can be the only deeds you need to sell the property unless they refer to Transfers, Conveyances etc in there.

    Please do not destroy any deeds you have to your house! While the Land Registry scan the documents there is human error involved and I've seen a deed from the Land Registry that had a page missing - cue a hunt for the original and when that couldn't be found the seller had to pay for an indemnity policy. I've also seen a Lease where the plan wasn't scanned in colour and that caused problems too.

    Keep your deeds somewhere safe like with your other important documents or ask your solicitor if they will store them for you. some will do this for free.

    We keep ours with the Nationwide, having left a nominal £1 balance on the mortgage they store the deeds free for us.
