    That was my thoughts, however the fella I spoke to on the phone stated clearly that even if it was/has been passed on to a debt collector they (the bank) would still have a record of the account, which they do not.

    A record still exists, it's just been moved and is no longer visible to customer services (as they no longer manage the account, the debt collection agency do instead).

    You have completely shot yourself in the foot.

    I would suggest contacting Blair, Oliver & Scott (who Halifax tend to use for debt collection) and explaining the situation to them.
