Paypal problem making payment to new seller - can anyone help?

Hi all,

I wondered if anyone with more Ebay/Paypal experience than me could help ...

I bought an item on Thursday from someone who looks like a new Ebay user (ie no feedback whatsoever). However, the payment wouldn't go through Paypal. First of all it said the payment was unclaimed by the account holder and it said I could cancel the payment. When I looked at other details of the person on the Paypal transaction, it said they were unregistered. So does this mean they don't have an account? For this reason I then cancelled the payment. But this money hasn't gone back into my Paypal account yet, it says there is a 'temporary hold'.

The seller is claiming they've used Paypal before for payments and not had any problems, although I have politely enquired if their Ebay account is linked to Paypal. I know there is no problem with my Paypal account because I paid for another item at the same time with no issues.

I have emailed Paypal but not yet had a response. At the moment the item on Ebay shows as me not paying, there's nothing to say I've attempted to pay, which I'm not happy with as I always pay promptly and don't want to get striked for non-payment.

I'm trying to give the new person the benefit of the doubt as we all have to start somewhere, it just seems a bit odd to me, and I've never had a payment say unclaimed or seen an account holder marked as unregistered on Paypal. I'm not going to agree to pay any other way than through Ebay though, but don't want to attempt paying again until I've heard back from Paypal.

Anyone heard of something like this before?

Many thanks in advance :)

The most common reason for this is the seller has incorrectly typed their paypal email address within the listing.

Ask them for their Paypal adresss and use that to pay them direct quoting the listing number and sending the payment marked 'goods'.

Sounds like the seller has not fully set up the account, I had that once with a seller and had to almost take them step by step on how to set up the account, but got there in the end.

The fact that the cancelled payment is now on hold might just suggest a slightly more complicated scenario- even the possibility of a previous user who has opened a sneaky new paypal account to start again- and has been caught. The withheld funds would be in case they were trying to do something dodgy- and you may well find your cancelled payment being held for a few days.

I would certainly not be looking to do anything at all until that payment was safely credited back to you.

Personally I would phone paypal and see if they have a time frame for releasing your funds back to you

If the op paid by card/bank funding via Paypal then the payment (if cancelled too quickly) in reality hasn't cleared yet, so will be held by paypal until it clears so they can release it back. This can take a few days, perhaps even a week.

It can take up to 5 days, but I've never seen the message that the OP has, except where the funds have caused a red flag.

I had similar albeit not quite the same recently on a private account. I managed to pay correctly but the item wasn't in stock so the seller refunded. As it was a Paypal account I rarely use it was fund-less. The amount was taken from my bank account. The refund, whilst showing on the Paypal account had the words 'temporary hold' on. It cleared itself after a few days.
