MS word docs saving as internet explorer

For some reason, many of my MS word documents in my folders are listed as Internet Explorer files..so when i click to open one up, Internet explorer launches (although I have firefox as my default browser).
This is also the case when i download word documents from my email..again, IE launches..it's so annoying and i can't find out how to stop this happening.

if anyone has any ideas, I'd be so grateful.

Right click on a file. There should (hopefully) an option called "Open With".

Then select Word in the option box and tick the box "Make this the default option for this file type".

OR if you have Windows 7

- Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
- Get .doc and .docx to be Microsoft Word
