system idle process

Options
i was just checking out the task manager on my windows xp and i just realised that the system idle process on my computer is taking up 97% of my cpu.

should i be worried

  • should i be worried

    No.

The System Idle Process basically gives the CPU something to do when it has no other processes scheduled.

It runs at the lowest priority, and so will get CPU time when nothing else is requesting CPU attention. So if you are not doing anything else on the PC it is perfectly normal to see high CPU usage.

The harder you, or other programs load the CPU, the less time is available for System Idle Process. :)
  • thanks for the great information

If your want your computer to do something more interesting in its spare time consider seti@home.

but read the various opinions on it at download.com first.
  • Or do folding: http://folding.stanford.edu/

I personally think that folding (studying proteins) is more helpful than searching for aliens ;)

Either way, both are good for ur pc when it's doing nothing useful.
