Back to the original post...

Applied for a Saga credit card - Cheap FX rates when spending abroad.
Got a letter this morning refusing me !
I failed there credit check or selection process.

We own our house worth £400,000 with no mortgage.
We have a joint income of over £65,000 a year.
No debt on any credit cards.
Have a bank account with more than £20,000 in it.
Have two other savings accounts with £10,000 in them.
Shares worth £11,000.

Guess I'm a bad risk ?
oh I do have a 0% car loan with £9,500 outstanding against a car worth £16,000 now it's 2 years old.

oh well plan B is buying a pre-loaded card and use it on holidays.

  • It was probably something that the automated system didn't like so it refused you. From what you've said I would suggest that appealing the decision (and thereby having a human being, rather than computer, look at your application) would probably result in an acceptance.

If you don't want to go to the hassle, the Halifax Clarity card is well regarded for foreign FX.

    That's irrelevant.
    with no mortgage.
Cleared in the last 6 years? If not, then they've nothing to go on regarding making repayments.
Have a bank account with more than £20,000 in it.
Have two other savings accounts with £10,000 in them.
    Shares worth £11,000.
They won't know any of that, since it's not asked for on the application form nor is it contained within your credit report.

Why not appeal their decision, adding this extra supporting information?

"Plan B" should be Halifax Clarity* or the Post Office shouldn't it?

    * Actually, Halifax Clarity should have been 'Plan A'.

Well ...google and find Halifax Clarity Web page.
    Apply on-line.
5 minutes later accepted for card and it's in the post.

Maybe I'm too young for a SAGA card ?

Unless they have changed it you will recieve the credit card agreement to sign and return before you get the card and pin.

Hope you have about 2 weeks before your holiday.

    It appeared when I applied on-line , I did a online signature ?
The web page then said "Your credit card is on it's way" and even gave an estimated credit limit.
    e-mail also as below ...

"Thank you for choosing one of our credit cards. Your card is being produced now and we’ll be posting it to you in the next few days.
When your new credit card arrives, please sign it and follow the simple steps to activate it as soon as possible. Once activated, you’ll be able to start using it immediately."

Either way I don't need it until the middle of July.

    I'm 50 and a half years old

If you set up any balance transfers as part of your application, we’ll send you a separate email confirming their progress.

I think their processes have changed for the better, I got my Clarity last June, it took forever to arrive, they sent me forms to sign and send back, followed by more waiting.

In contrast, my sister applied a couple of months ago and had it within a week, signing online, as you did.
