Claiming tax relief on a second car

I run a pet sitting business and use my vehicle for transporting dogs etc for walks I claim .45p per mile.

My husband`s car is sign written (mobile advertising as he drives around a lot with HIS work) now he does do pet visits for me as well in his vehicle.

Can we claim expenses against his vehicle??

If you are employed and use your own car for the purposes of work you can claim a car mileage allowance. You can claim on the costs of car tax, insurance, repairs and servicing your vehicle.

If your vehicle is used for both private and business activities you can only claim the proportion of these rebates which relates to your business. This is usually based on the ratio of your business to your total mileage.

How much you can claim will depend on whether you use your vehicle solely or partly for business purposes. If you use your vehicle solely for business purposes you should be able to claim back all your running costs.

If your car or other vehicle is used partly for business purposes we will need to work out the ratio mileage before we can claim your car use rebate. This means you will need to keep a note of business mileage for a representative period as well as all the bills incurred. This will allow us to claim everything you are owed.

To clam a Car Rebate keep a note of your costs.

In addition to this, you can also your claim for any professional fees you pay, travel expenses or tools and equipment which you may also have to pay for yourself for work purposes.

Remember that by making a claim for a professional fees and or uniform tax rebate you could not only potentially be due £100′s in tax relief, but your tax code will also change meaning that you pay less tax in future years!

    Does that help?

So am I correct in saying your husband works for you in his spare time?

And that the sign written vehicle actually belongs to him? (including buying it himself under a hire purchase agreement)

If so, you can pay him up to 45p per mile for the mileage carried out "wholly and exclusively in the course of your business" without him having to pay any tax. (the usual annual limit applies before the acceptable amount reduces)

This is a business expense against your business.

Note: He can only do this if he is not claiming reimbusement of business use of his vehicle via another method for his other job.

Can I just check what you're saying: are you saying that if someone has more than one part-time job, in each of which they have the right to reclaim essential business mileage, they can only do this on ONE job?

Also does it make a difference if the OP's DH is employed by her, or just doing odd jobs on a similarly self-employed basis? It's not clear to me on what basis he's using the vehicle for her, and I don't know if it would matter.

And ... is the OP self-employed as a sole trader, or running a ltd company? Which again, I guess, may matter ...

No, what I am trying to say is he can't claim 45p per mile in one job and claimed receipted expenses for the vehicle in another (e.g. fuel. servicing, repairs, etc)

He has to choose one method or another.

If he's employed by her, then she can pay him expenses (and these are deductable from her business.)
If he is self employed and supplying services to his wife's business, she cannot pay him expenses, so she cannot put these as an expense against her business.

May I ask why you think that may matter?
