TV problems!

Our main TV a Philips 28PW6006C has just started showing 2 faults!

First, large discoloured patches are appearing either side of the screen - these tend to fade if a lot of scene changes on the prog we are watching!

Second, the picture seems to flick from normal to 'fatten' picture and back again?

I guess something is breaking down/going wrong!

Any thoughts? Is this going to be expensive?

Many thanks

Do you have any loudspeakers near the TV?

They can cause this picture colour distortion..

as for the expense it could be huge? it all depends what is wrong with it, as inactive said magents in speakers are the usual cause for discolouration like your describing. speakers in TV's are sheilded to stop it happening with the build in speakers and centre and front speakers for surround sound systems also use shelding. I havnt ever seen the shielding fail but it possible can. normally removing the magnetic source can reduce the discolouration over time so move the speakers.

Im not sure about philips but the picture flicking is normally the source changeing aspect ratio and the screen may have an auto sense feature, you could turn that feature off and stop it flicking. it could also be the source failing either a freeview box or somthing?

Thanks for your replies, the TV has been in situ for about 5 yaers with no changes - speakers/boxes etc. It's not the aspect ratio 'cos peoples faces are distorted on all the settings 4:3, 14:9, widescreen, superwide, etc.

It sounds like a degauss problem which can be cured very easily and cheaply try leaving tv of for about a day make sure you unplug it as well, that my cure it. Otherwise it is the degauss termistor.

Thanks for your suggestions, have tried the 'unplug for a weekend' treatment without success. I'll have to find a decent TV repair chap in the 'Cotswolds'!
