Well, yes. You normally have to demonstrate that you were in financial hardship in order to obtain a refund of bank charges. The Nationwide are simply asking for some further information in order to establish whether or not you were experiencing any financial difficulties.

If you are making a request under financial hardship then the bank/building society will analyse your statement for transactions and ask you to complete a budget form as well as look at your overall debt and how you have been repaying it.

You are applying to their goodwill for a refund. Not filling their form in will make the chances of a goodwill payment less.

What is the basis of your claim? Their reply suggests it is based on financial difficulty. How are they supposed to assess your financial difficulties without the information they have requested from you?

If you don't send the information, they won't consider any refund, so it's up to you really.

If you have any spending on your account that isn't classed as essential ie. gas/elec/water/rent/mortgage/food etc then i'm afraid you won't have much luck. Things like Sky, mobile contracts, eating out, etc aren't classed as essentials.
