Car Insurance

I would like everyone's opinions on my following rant::money:

I looked over my car insurance documents earlier and found out it was up for renewal.
So I did what we all do, is do a comparison search. I am currently with Admiral whose renewal price was £483, on moneysupermarket I was quoted £240 by Diamond, their sister company.

Whilst on the phone, Admiral said they would match the new quote. I agreed. During the phone call they asked to re check all details as they do.

A 10 minute phone call turned into a 40 minute call when I was told that the quote had gone up from £240 to £310.

The reason being, in January 2013, which I did not add into the above quote. I was travelling to work, I live in North Wales. As I was turning to down a slip road, to join the dual carriageway, the woman in the car in front who was already on the slip road started reversing without checking and reversed into me.

When the above happened, I notified my insurance (Admiral) who then told me I wouldn't loose any No Claims as I wasn't making a claim, how it wouldn't effect me in anyway as I was only reporting the incident. The woman accepted all responsibility and her insurance paid for minor repairs.

So I was told by Admiral this evening that the above is classed as an accident - not at fault. Admiral believes that even if the party in question didn't make a claim and only made the insurance aware that people who report this sort of thing are demeaned more likely to make a claim next time and as they drive in congested areas are more likely to become part of an accident.

I am just annoyed as this does not apply to me as it's against the law to reverse up a slip road, so now I have to pay £70 more this year and god knows how much more the following years to come, for another persons negligence, and how I didn't bother my insurance at all and they didn't have to pay out. But yet they put my price up!

I think someone should look into insurance companies and how they come up with their quotes/prices!!

    For technical pricing insurers use large statistical models for mass market products, its very mathematical and not "logical".

    To be honest, you are somewhat lucky that they offered a renewal at only £70 more. When you completed the quote you intentionally didnt answer the question on if you'd been involved in any incidents correctly and therefore tried to obtain a fraudulent quote. Many insurers will either void a policy or at least add an extra loading to customers who do this and are only found out by secondary checks.

    To not tell your insurers after claiming from the TPI would be very dangerous as almost certainly the details would be on CUE and then you're much more likely to have a policy voided for non-disclosure and premiums at least double for life across all classes of personal lines GI

    I agree it is a bit harsh as you were not at fault but I can see their reasoning. They will charge you more for parking your car on a road instead of a driveway even thought that doesn't mean you are going to claim. Did you make a point to the person on the phone that this was not due to living in a congested area, but because of someone else's bad driving? Any way that you could get that woman to pay the excess £70?

    As already explained , insurance is based on statistical data and usually people who are involved in an accident are statistically more likely to have ( be involved in) another incident.

    This might not apply to you, you may never have another accident in your life but it isn't based on individual circumstances , the statistics say you probably will so you have to live with it.
